Case study
A set of performance measurements were conducted by HRL Technology on a large steam turbine-generator unit. The results were compared to previous results from similar tests conducted by HRL Technology two years previous, which showed and approximate 8% reduction in maximum generating capacity. The results were further diagnosed using process modelling programs to assess the most likely cause for deterioration in performance. It was concluded that the corrected main stream flow had reduced enough to cause this problem, together wiht some turbine cylinder efficiency reductions. This was also supported by increased pressure drops across a turbine stage.
The turbine was opened up and found to contain blockages of the HP turbine inlet and also damage to turbine blades and internals. These were repaired and the unit was reinstated. HRL Technology conducted a post-repair set of performance measurements that concluded that the maximum generating capacity and cylinder efficiencies had returned close to their optimum operating condition. The post-repair performance test results were also used to compare to contractual performance guarantees provided by the maintenance contractor. Installed station instrumentation could not provide the same level of accuracy and confidence in the measured and calculated results. |
