Boiler modelling and optimisation

Are you looking for strategies to optimise the complex combustion processes within your boilers?

We provide each customer with the best solution by:

Utilising a range of advanced software systems to help understand and improve the operation of combustion and steam raising equipment.

FLUENT CFD

Full 3-dimensional representation of gas, particulate and steam flows. Usually applied to the furnace zone to investigate combustion and radiant heat transfer issues.

ASPEN PLUS

Full cycle simulation, from the furnace zone through each convective element. Most useful in identifying heat transfer in-balances and able to calculate the effect of addition or removal of heat transfer surface, or changes in firing rate.

STEAM MASTER / PRO

Specialist steam cycle simulation, including detail of turbine stages and feed heating. Often useful in identifying effects of off-design operation.

Case Study

A new power station was found to have an in-balance in their split convective pass flows. Detailed modelling using a combined CFD – ASPEN approach showed poor furnace performance was resulting in high furnace exit temperatures. Issues with the combustion were identified and effects of changes to reheater surface area quantified.

Our customers have enjoyed benefits including:
  • understand and quantify effects of changes to overall cycle design (eg taking a feedheater out of service, changing heat transfer surface area)
  • ability to handle a range of fuels outside of design specification
  • diagnose and correct combustion problems, such as high carbon-in-ash, slagging / fouling, flame stability
  • quantify economic benefit from possible modifications to justify capital expenditure
