Strain, Temperature, Stress, Load, Displacement and Vibration Measurement
Do you believe it is important to have an accurate picture of the condition of your plant?
We use a variety of assessment tools and choose the most appropriate for your application.
We can:
- use strain gauging at low and high temperature
- collect temperature data using thermocouples and other sensors
- measure transient behaviour using high speed data acquisition
- monitor corrosion over time
- assess vibration through analysis
- identify hot spots through thermography imaging and analysis
Using strain gauges and thermocouples affixed to plant components we obtain data to calculate residual and operating stresses resulting from mechanical loading, thermal gradients, thermal cycling and vibration. Using the best available technologies, dynamic and strain measurement to 750° is achievable.
Out of balance in rotating machinery is a major source of excessive machine vibration. HRL’s balancing approach includes the multi plane influence coefficients procedure ensuring the best practical balance in the shortest number of trial runs. We have balanced both rigid and flexible rotors in feedwater pumps, turbines and generators.
HRL undertakes machine condition monitoring and vibration analysis to provide early warning of machine defects and to develop preventative strategies.
Thermographic infrared imaging is a major component of the condition monitoring program – applied not only to the assessment of electrical equipment, insulation and refractories but also for bearing and drive train alignment issues.

Case study
Reheater outlet header cracking
Monitoring and assessment of temperature and strains led to the identification of the root cause of ligament cracking in the header. Our recommendations meant that the customer now knows the source of the problem and was able to affect appropriate repairs and changes to operational conditions to solve the problem.
