The inspection and assessment of the condition of steelwork often includes visual inspection, surveys of depth of corrosion penetration and assessment of corrosion rate and effect on structural integrity.
In the field of coatings the services offered include assessment and specification of protective coating systems, quality assurance, thickness surveys, investigations into coating breakdown and adhesion, ultrasonic thickness measurements, abrasion resistance, adhesion tests, friction tests and standard slip-testing for flooring.
HRL Technology has extensive experience in the weighing of dredgers and reclaimers to assess stability. We also 'weigh' power station boilers to ensure even distribution of loads on hangers.
Concrete quality is assured with tests for void detection with Pundit ultrasonic, cement content, compressive strength and resistivity. Complete chemical characterisation includes tests for carbonation / neutralisation testing and chloride and sulphate ion concentration profile.
In the assessment of the life or integrity of the asset site work may include visual inspections, half-cell potential mapping, delamination testing, reinforcement cover survey and Schmidt Hammer surface hardness surveys.

Case study
Potential failure of a stacker/reclaimer
The stability and structural integrity of a large coal stacker/reclaimer was uncertain because there had been numerous modificaitons to the unit. We weighed the reclaimer by jacking and supporting the unit on load cells. From the weights the centre of gravity was determined. This information allowed the unit to be balance thus avoiding excessive wear and controlling the risk of collapse.
