Identifying Combustion and Air Heater Performance Opportunities Case Study

Challenge

Our client operates a power plant located in Australia. The combustion process is critical to the plant's performance, and any inefficiencies can lead to increased fuel consumption, emissions, and reduced plant availability.

HRL was approached to conduct a study to assess the combustion and rotary air heater system performance with the aim to identify inefficiencies and provide recommendations to optimise the systems' performance.

Solution

1.         Rotary Air Heater (RAH) Leakage Measurements

HRL used its Multipoint Combustion Diagnostic Analyser to provide rapid 1-hour measurements of the gas composition of the flue gas around the airheaters minimising the boiler fluctuations and time taken for the test.

2.         Combustion Gas Measurements

Like the airheater leakage measurements, HRL uses the MCDA to measure the combustion products for analysis. This allows poor performing burners / furnace areas to be identified and adjustment (if required) efficiently made.

3.         EUflame 2D System

Continuous Furnace Exit Gas Temperature (FEGT) measurements were conducted with HRL's EUflame 2D system. Sensors mounted to the furnace wall detects infrared energy radiated by gases and objects within the furnace. The EUflame sensors were used to monitor in real time the FEGT profile across the front wall of the furnace providing feedback into the combustion process and heat pickup of the boiler walls and pedants.

Results

The following recommendations were made to the client:

1.      Reassess Current Combustion Strategy: Current strategy is not yielding desired results; critically review it for a holistic approach/adjustments to optimise burner settings.

2.      Review Oxygen Probe Placement: Reconsider probe placement, aiming for accurate measurements of the excess O2 for effective combustion and boiler control.

3.      Expand FEGT Measurements: Expanding the number of test ports around the furnace will allow for more accurate quantification of FEGT distribution.

Overall, the study conducted by HRL provided valuable insights into the combustion and rotary air heater systems performance. The recommendations made by HRL have the potential to improve the plant's efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and emissions, and increase plant availability.

What Our Clients Say

"For certain alleged foreign matter complaints in our products we need not only the analytical services provided by the lab there at HRL, but particularly the expert opinion of scientists such as Greg Richards to give an independent opinion on the ...
