Laboratory Assistant

Based at Mulgrave, Victoria

HRL has an opportunity for a hands-on Laboratory Assistant to join our Analytical Services Team on a full time basis, to assist in the delivery of laboratory services in our Mulgrave facilities with full training provided.

About the role

Working as part of a team, in line with government operating and reporting standards, the Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Performing duties around the processing and mechanical pulping of wood chips including screening of chips, ‘cooks’ and undertaking related tests such as basic density and moisture content.
  • Selecting appropriate solutions for ‘cooking’ of wood chips.
  • Processing and analysing completed cooks and associated data, e.g. Kappa number (residual lignin content of wood pulp).
  • Data entry and recording of information in laboratory notebooks.
  • Ensuring fast turnaround time, accuracy, reliability and confidentiality.
  • Preparing and standardising chemicals as required.
  • Performing all set tasks in a timely manner.

About you

You will have

  • Laboratory Certificate or previous experience in a chemical laboratory (advantageous, but not essential).
  • A commitment to safe work practices.
  • Physical capability and previous experience in a manually-demanding role.
  • A mature outlook and strong work ethic.
  • High levels of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • An ability to work without supervision and complete allocated tasks.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A sound knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of packages including Excel.
  • A valid driver’s licence.

Laboratory Technician

Due to continued success and growth, HRL has an opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to join our Analytical Services Team to assist in the delivery of laboratory services in our Mulgrave facility with full training provided. This role will be multi-faceted and involve undertaking a wide range of laboratory tasks requiring a flexible work approach to meet changing demands and priorities. 

About the role

Working as part of a busy fast-paced team, the Laboratory Technician will be responsible for: 

  • Providing technical hands-on support to the analytical services team involved in the analysis of a diverse range of samples including, coal, chars, biomass, alternative fuels, raw materials, glass, etc.
  • Preparation of samples for further testing and analysis utilising numerous preparation techniques including but not limited to sieving, grinding, acid digestions, fusions etc.
  • Performing a wide of chemical tests e.g., pH, specific gravity, density, etc.
  • Operating laboratory equipment including particle size analyser, calorimeter, furnace, oven, and other equipment as required.
  • Maintaining the test results data base.
  • Following all documented procedures to ensure maintenance of quality accreditation.
  • Conducting Quality Control assessment of data and assisting with reporting of results.
  • Occasionally collecting offsite samples. 
  • Assisting with other laboratory tasks, as required.

The Analytical team see this role as the first step towards an ongoing role, as the position will support areas of the business with significant growth potential.

About you

You will be energetic in your approach, a committed and enthusiastic team player, passionate to pursue continuous learning and willing to undertake a wide range of tasks. You must be flexible in your work approach and able to handle changing demands and priorities to meet Company and customer expectations. 

You will have: 

  • Diploma or higher qualification in Chemistry or related field (would suit a recent graduate with 1-2 years laboratory experience).
  • Competent technical ability with high levels of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work without supervision and complete allocated tasks on time.
  • Some instrumental knowledge and experience (advantageous) e.g. GC, AA, UV-Vis, ICP-OES.
  • A commitment to safe work practices.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A sound knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of packages including Excel.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
