Laboratory Assistant

Based in Mulgrave, Victoria

The Opportunity

HRL has an opportunity for a hands-on Laboratory Assistant to join our Analytical Services Team on a full-time basis, to assist in the delivery of laboratory services in our Mulgrave facilities with full training provided.

About the role

Working as part of a team, in line with government operating and reporting standards, the Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for:

  • Performing duties around the processing and pulping of wood chips
  • Screening of chips and related tests such as basic density and moisture content
  • Determining what active alkali to use for cooks
  • Processing cooks
  • Determining kappa number
  • Analysing finished cooks
  • Mechanical pulping
  • Standardisation of chemicals
  • Entering all information in a database and laboratory notebooks
  • Ensuring fast turnaround time, accuracy, reliability and confidentiality
  • Making up other chemicals as required
  • Performing all set tasks in a timely manner
  • Processing and analysing collected data.

About you

You will be energetic in your approach, a committed and enthusiastic team player, passionate to pursue continuous learning and willing to undertake a wide range of tasks.

You will have:

  • Chemistry exposure (advantageous)
  • A commitment to safe work practices
  • Experience in laboratory procedures
  • High levels of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills
  • An ability to work without supervision and complete allocated tasks
  • A sound knowledge of the Microsoft Suite of packages including Excel
  • A mature outlook and strong work ethic
  • Physical capability and previous experience in a manually-demanding role
  • A valid driver's licence

Senior Combustion Engineer

Based at Coopers Plains, Queensland

HRL is a provider of expert milling and combustion testing and consulting services in Australia and South East Asia. Due to the continued success and growth in this sector, HRL is seeking to employ a Senior Combustion Engineer, based in Brisbane, Australia.

About you

As a senior Process or Mechanical Engineer, with at least five-years of hands on relevant professional experience, the successful applicant will work with and lead a range of tasks primarily focusing on the provision of expert milling and combustion testing and consulting services. The role will also involve tasks in providing plant performance testing, process engineering, modelling and environmental consultancy services to a range of industries including the power generation, manufacturing and chemical sectors.

Selection Criteria:

You will:

  • Be energetic in your approach.
  • Eager to learn and absorb knowledge from experienced mentors.
  • Have an engineering background in heavy industry, large processing plants, and/or boiler plant systems, looking to transition into power plant operation and consulting engineering.
  • A Chemical or Mechanical Engineering degree, acceptable to the Institute of Engineers Australia.
  • More than five years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrable ability to engage with multiple stakeholders at various levels within an organisation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for periods of one to four weeks at regular frequency..
  • Strong analytical skills, with a methodical approach to work with attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Demonstrated practical and hands-on skills. This role will involve physical activities at client sites.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • A valid driver's licence.

Highly regarded will be:

  • Demonstrable experience with flexible thermal power plant operations, coal blending, utilisation of low rank coals, alternative fuels and clinker formation/mitigation.
  • Demonstrable experience with coal milling and solid fuel combustion optimisation and boiler tuning.
  • Experience in an operational role and/or a consulting background.
