Professional Background

Joel joined HRL in 2018 while finishing his PhD degree at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne. His applied research experience is related to the Ironmaking Industry carrying out computational modelling work of the blast furnace burden flow (Doctoral Thesis) and modelling of the heat and mass transfer during the sintering process of iron ore fines (Master’s Thesis).

Joel has work experience in a variety of process industries, such as the thermal power industry, waste to energy facilities, mining and mineral processing, and manufacturing industries.

Relevant Project Experience

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Modelling of the Fuel Flow in a Qld Coal Fired Power Station

  • Simulation of the primary air (PA) flow distribution from the air heaters to the mills under consideration of different operating scenarios, e.g., high / low load conditions and numbers of mills in service
  • Modelling of the pulverised fuel (PF) distribution in power station service mills and proposal of measures to achieve a more even flow distribution
  • Modelling of the PF flow from the mills to the burner to assess erosion patterns and proposal of measures to prevent erosion and increase operating life

Environmental Reporting for an Australian-based Resources Company

  • Review of company-wide energy consumption, electricity generation, and greenhouse gas emissions data for exploration, mining, processing, and rehabilitation sites
  • National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) and Sustainability Reporting in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards

Technology Review and Costing Study for a Greenfield Coal Briquetting Plant (Indonesia)

  • Review and selection of best suitable technologies for coal preparation (crushing and drying) and coal briquetting
  • Development of heat and mass balances for the coal drying process including thermodynamic boiler modelling to generate heat for drying
  • Costing estimation and economic evaluation of the coal briquetting plant

Technical Assessment of Oil Shale Extraction Process

  • Comparative review of industrial oil shale extraction processes
  • Technical assessment of the scalability of a supercritical shale oil solvent extraction process with system integration of vanadium processing.

Monthly Data Review and Greenhouse Gas Reporting for Major Qld LNG Facility

  • Review of daily production reports, gas composition data, shipping reports and flare data
  • NGER calculations, monthly NGER reporting and half-yearly data reviews

CFD Simulation of Attemperating Spray System for Flue Gas Cooling in a Vic. Coal Fired Power Station

  • Evaluation of the technical feasibility of an evaporative flue gas cooling system
  • Modelling of different scenarios / installation locations of the attemperator sprays
